Wedding AV Hire In Manchester: The Complete 2026/27 Guide To Sound, Microphones, Lighting And Stage

In short: Book 4–8 months ahead for a Saturday between May and September. Manchester dates go early, and the rest of this guide is the detail.

A registrar once asked me to move a microphone stand thirty seconds before a bride walked in. Not because it was in the wrong place acoustically. Because it was in the wrong place for the photographs.

That is wedding AV hire in one moment. The kit has to work, obviously. But it also has to disappear into a day that has been imagined for eighteen months, and nobody wants a speaker stand in the middle of the aisle shot.

So this is the guide I would give you if you rang me in August wanting to sort the sound for a 2026 or 2027 wedding. What you actually need, what it costs, when to book it, and the handful of questions that stop the whole thing going sideways on the day.

What Wedding AV Hire Actually Covers

"AV" is a lazy word. It gets used to mean everything from a Bluetooth speaker to a forty-thousand-pound production rig, which is not much help when you are trying to work out what to book.

For a wedding, wedding AV hire almost always means some combination of five things.

The Five Parts Of Wedding AV Hire

  • Sound reinforcement — speakers, so people can hear.
  • Microphones — for vows, readings, speeches and the band.
  • Music playback — a way to get your playlist into those speakers reliably.
  • Lighting — uplighting, dance-floor effects, sometimes both.
  • Staging — a platform for a band, a top table or a first dance.

You will not need all five. Plenty of weddings need two. But it is worth naming them separately, because the thing that goes wrong is usually a gap between them — the speeches sound great and then the evening playlist comes out of a phone in a pint glass.

When To Book Wedding AV Hire For A 2026 Or 2027 Date

Here's the thing about wedding dates: they are not evenly spread. Roughly two thirds of the weddings we supply fall between May and September, and almost all of them are Saturdays. Which means a handful of dates in the diary get asked for over and over.

Your DateWhen To Book Wedding AV HireWhy
Saturday, May–September6–8 monthsPeak. Popular dates are committed a long way out.
Friday or Sunday, May–September4–6 monthsBusy, but more give in the diary.
October–April, any day2–4 monthsQuieter, apart from the run-up to Christmas.
Simple collect-it-yourself hire3 days is genuinely fineIf it is two speakers and a mic, we can turn that round quickly.

That last row matters. There is a lot of scaremongering in the wedding industry about booking everything eighteen months out. For a full production, book early. For a two-speaker system and a microphone, do not let anyone panic you.

Wedding AV Hire For The Ceremony: Microphones That Actually Work

A Shure handheld microphone on a stand inside a tipi wedding venue decorated with fairy lights and set tables
A handheld radio mic set up in a tipi. Fairy lights are lovely and acoustically useless — the mic choice is doing the work here.

The ceremony is the part people under-plan, and it is the part where failure is most visible. Everybody is silent, everybody is looking, and if the vows are inaudible from row six there is no recovering it later.

Three things make a ceremony hard for sound. The room is often stone or glass. The people speaking are quiet, because they are nervous or emotional. And the microphone cannot be anywhere near the shot.

What To Book For Ceremony Wedding AV Hire

  • A lapel or headset microphone for the officiant. They speak the most and they know how to use one.
  • A second lapel mic on the groom — it picks up both sets of vows without a stand between you.
  • One handheld radio mic on a stand for readings. Guests reading are unpredictable; a handheld is forgiving.
  • One small speaker per fifty guests, placed to the side rather than behind you.

If you are only going to take one thing from this section: hire more microphones than you think you need. In twenty-one and a half years I have never once been told there were too many. I have been handed a single mic to cover an officiant, two readers and five speeches more times than I can count. That is when you end up playing pass-the-mic, and it looks exactly as awkward as it sounds.

Our microphone hire range covers handheld radio mics, lapels and headsets, and the wireless microphone systems are the ones most weddings end up on, because trailing a cable down an aisle is not an option.

Wedding AV Hire For Speeches And The Wedding Breakfast

A handheld radio mic at the top table. Note he is holding it close — that is what makes a speech carry, not volume.

Speeches are a different job to the ceremony. The room is fuller, there is cutlery, and there is wine. People will be less crisp than they were at two o'clock.

The practical answer is usually one good handheld radio mic that gets passed deliberately between speakers, plus speakers positioned so the far corner of the room hears the same thing the top table does. If your room is long and narrow — a lot of Manchester's converted mill venues are — that often means two smaller speakers rather than one loud pair at the front.

Wedding Lighting Hire: What Actually Changes A Room

A dance-floor lighting package on one stand. Everything here earns its keep after 9pm and does nothing before it.

A note on volume, because it comes up every time. Speech does not want to be loud. It wants to be clear. Turning everything up makes a hard room worse, not better. Getting the speaker in the right place beats getting it louder every single time.

Two small things that improve speeches more than any equipment upgrade. First, tell your speakers to hold the microphone close — under the chin, not at chest height. Nervous people hold a mic like it is hot. Second, agree the handover order in advance so nobody is patting pockets for cue cards while holding a live mic in front of a hundred and twenty people.

Wedding AV Hire For Marquees, Tipis And Barns

A good third of the weddings we cover in the North West are in a marquee, a tipi or a converted barn rather than a hotel function suite. They are lovely rooms and they behave completely differently to a hotel.

Canvas absorbs sound, which is mostly good news — a marquee rarely echoes. What it does instead is swallow the top end, so speech can end up sounding muffled rather than boomy. The fix is placement and a bit more headroom, not brute volume.

Marquee And Barn Wedding AV Hire: What Changes

  • Power is the first question, not the last. Find out what supply you have and how many sockets are near the dance floor. Generators and extension runs need planning.
  • Weather cover. Kit needs to stay dry, including during set-up and get-out. A muddy field at midnight in October is a real consideration.
  • Ground conditions. Speaker stands and staging need something flat. Grass and matting behave differently.
  • Sound travels further outdoors. If there are neighbours, there may be a noise condition on the licence. Ask.

Barns are the opposite problem. Stone, timber and a high roof mean reflections, and a room that sounds fine when it is empty at eleven in the morning sounds quite different with a hundred and fifty people and soft furnishings in it. That is normal and it is manageable — it just means the setup matters more than the badge on the speaker.

Wedding AV Hire For The Evening Reception: Speakers, DJs And Bands

The same room an hour before the evening starts. Warm uplighting on the walls, tables cleared, ready to turn over.

The evening is where most of the wedding AV hire budget goes, and where the decision tree actually branches.

DJ bringing nothingSpeakers, sub, DJ controller, boothUp to 200

That last row is the one worth acting on today. Ask your band what they bring before you hire anything. Some bands arrive with a full PA and want nothing from you. Some arrive with instruments and an expectation. A five-minute email now prevents you paying twice for the same speakers.

If you need a system for the evening, the sound system hire options run from a straightforward two-speaker setup up to a d&b audiotechnik rig that will comfortably cover a few hundred people, and the DJ equipment range covers controllers, CDJs and booths if your DJ is travelling light.

"He was great at telling us what we needed just of a brief description of the space we had and didn't try to oversell any equipment or push any extra equipment we decided not to use... We hired a PA speaker system, dj stage and some 360 lighting."

Lighting is the one where the gap between cost and effect is widest. A few hundred pounds of lighting changes a room more than a few hundred pounds of anything else. It is also the easiest thing to get wrong by buying the wrong type.

Wedding Lighting Hire, By What It Does

  • Uplighters — sit on the floor pointing up a wall or pillar. Warm the room, photograph beautifully, do nothing for a dance floor. The single best-value item on this list.
  • Dance-floor effects — moving heads and LED bars. They do exactly one job, and they do it after 9pm.
  • Festoon — strings of warm bulbs. Structural, gentle, brilliant in a marquee or a tipi.
  • Haze — makes light beams visible. Wonderful for a band. Check your venue's fire panel first, always.

If your venue is a plain function room, uplighting is the thing. If it is a converted barn with beams and character already, spend it on the dance floor instead. Our party lighting hire packages cover the evening end of that, and the stage lighting hire range is where to look if there is a band to light properly.

Wedding Stage Hire: When You Need One, And When You Do Not

A low modular stage deck in a function room with blue uplighting, holding a poseur table and two high stools
A single-deck platform. One deck height is often all a room needs — enough to define a space without eating the floor.

Wedding stage hire is worth a section of its own because it is searched for far more than it is needed, and people order it for the wrong reason.

You need a stage if a band needs to be seen over a standing crowd, or if a top table needs raising in a very wide room. You do not need one just because the venue looks a bit flat. A stage in a room that does not want one eats floor space and makes the room feel smaller.

A useful rule: if the audience will be seated, you probably do not need a stage. If they will be standing and there is a band, you probably do. Sections come as modular decks, so the size flexes to the room rather than the other way round — the details are on the stage hire page.

Two heights are worth knowing about. A single deck lifts a band or a top table just enough to be seen over a seated room. A double lifts them over a standing crowd. Most wedding stage hire in Manchester is the first, and people over-order the second because it sounds more impressive on paper.

One more consideration people forget: a stage needs somewhere for the band to get on and off, and somewhere for their cases to live. A drummer with a full kit needs more depth than you would guess. If you are hiring a stage for a band, send us their spec sheet and we will size it properly rather than guessing.

Wedding AV Hire Costs In Manchester: What To Budget

We publish our prices on the site, which is unusual in this industry and deliberate. You should be able to see what things cost without filling in a form and waiting two days.

Wedding AV Hire PackageIndicative PriceSuits
Two-speaker PA, stands, mixer, cables£118 inc. VATUp to 150 guests, playlist or a band with their own kit
Two-speaker RCF systemfrom ~£180A step up in headroom for a livelier evening
Two-speaker d&b audiotechnik systemfrom ~£500Up to ~250 guests where the sound really matters
Microphonesfrom £100 minimum hireCeremony and speeches

Two things about that table. The minimum hire is £100, so it is worth grouping what you need into one booking rather than three small ones. And the prices are the prices — they do not change because the word "wedding" is in the email.

"Steven was amazing from the first message, super helpful on all questions, quick to reply, and offered his competitive prices as advertised on his website compared to other vendors that inflate them for weddings... ST Audio handled setup and pack-down perfectly, worked smoothly with the venue, and made the whole thing completely stress-free."

Dry Hire, Delivered Or Operated: Choosing Your Wedding AV Hire Service Level

There are three ways to take wedding AV hire from us, and picking the right one is mostly about how much you want on your plate on the morning of the wedding.

  • Dry hire — you collect it, you set it up, you bring it back. Available on orders up to £350. Cheapest, and genuinely fine for a two-speaker system.
  • Delivered — anything over £350. We bring it, we set it up properly, you sign it off, we go, and we come back for it. We never just leave boxes in a corridor.
  • Operated — we stay. Worth it if there is a band, multiple microphones, or nobody in the wedding party who wants the job.

Most weddings sit in the middle. Delivered means the equipment is working before you have thought about it, and there is nobody standing in the corner of your reception you have to feed.

Questions To Ask Your Venue Before You Book Wedding AV Hire

Nine times out of ten, the thing that complicates a wedding is not the kit. It is the building. Ask these before you book anything.

Eleven Questions Worth Asking

  • Is there a sound limiter? What level does it cut at?
  • What time does music have to stop?
  • When can we get in to set up, and when must we be out?
  • Is there parking for a van near the door, or is it a long carry?
  • Are there stairs, or a lift?
  • How many 13A sockets are near the dance floor?
  • Is haze or smoke allowed, or will it set the alarm off?
  • Does the venue have its own PA, and is it actually any good?
  • Can anything be fixed to the walls or beams?
  • Is the ceremony room the same as the evening room?
  • Who is on site on the day if something needs unlocking?

The sound limiter is the big one. A lot of Manchester venues have them, plenty do not mention them until late, and a limiter that cuts at 90dB changes what is worth hiring. Find out early and nobody has an unpleasant surprise at half past nine.

Wedding AV Hire FAQs

How Much Does Wedding AV Hire Cost In Manchester?
A two-speaker system with stands, mixer and cables starts at £118 including VAT. Adding microphones for the ceremony and speeches, plus lighting for the evening, most weddings land somewhere between £300 and £800 depending on guest numbers and whether you want it delivered and set up.
How Far In Advance Should I Book Wedding AV Hire?
Six to eight months for a Saturday between May and September. Two to four months for an off-peak date. A simple collect-it-yourself hire can genuinely be arranged in about three days, so do not panic if you have left it late and your needs are modest.
Do I Need A PA System For A Wedding Ceremony?
If you have more than about fifty guests, or the room is stone, glass or outdoors, yes. Below that, in a soft room, often not. The bigger issue at a ceremony is rarely volume — it is that the people speaking are quiet and the microphone is in the wrong place.
How Many Microphones Do I Need For Wedding Speeches?
One good handheld radio microphone is usually enough for speeches if it is passed deliberately. Add a second if speakers are seated at different ends of a long table. For the ceremony, budget for two or three separately — an officiant lapel, a groom lapel and a handheld for readings.
Can I Collect Wedding AV Hire Equipment Myself?
Yes, on orders up to £350. We will show you how to set it up, and we can send a short video so you are not relying on memory at the venue. Above £350 we deliver and set it up, which most people find is worth it on a wedding morning.
What Happens If My Venue Has A Sound Limiter?
It changes what is worth hiring, so tell us early. A limiter cuts the power if the room gets past a set level. There is no point paying for a large system that will spend the night being switched off. Once we know the limit we will recommend accordingly.
Do You Supply Wedding AV Hire Outside Manchester?
Yes. We cover the North West, broadly Liverpool across to Leeds, which takes in most of Greater Manchester, Cheshire and Lancashire.
Should I Use My Band's PA Or Hire A Separate System?
Ask the band first — this is the single most useful email you can send. Many bands bring a full system and want nothing from you. Others bring instruments only. If their system covers the evening, you may only need something small for the ceremony and speeches.

Getting A Recommendation For Your Wedding AV Hire

If you tell me the venue, the date, roughly how many guests and what is happening in the evening, I can tell you what you actually need. Sometimes that is less than people expect. Occasionally it is a microphone more.

Either way you will get a recommendation rather than a sales pitch, with the prices you can already see on the site, and the person who talks it through with you is the person who turns up on the day.
